One of the biggest problems that we have sometimes have as parents is getting our kids to sit and attend to a meal for the entire time that we are at a restaurant. Although it would be amazing, but when you look at the attention spans of toddlers and children, it’s not a feasible goal.
So what possibly is the tip about this?
What works for our family is to start with everyone at the table. We sit and look through the menu and talk about what to order. After we order and have some conversation, either my husband or I will take our youngest and go for a walk, to explore outside or in the lobby of the restaurant. We do this for about 10 minutes, come back, and sit, and usually the food comes shortly after.
This has been so helpful for us, because we can’t expect our toddlers to sit at a table for 30 minutes, until food comes and then to sit for another 20-30 minutes to eat.
Taking a quick walk before eating, also helps their sensory system get ready for sitting and eating…remember physical activities before meals are helpful!
